Greek video art @ Fournos, Athens

Video Art Miden presents a selection of contemporary Greek video art at Fournos – Theater & Centre for Digital Culture in Athens, featuring 25 video art works by Greek artists and groups who have participated in Miden screening events, in Greece and abroad, during the past two years.

The selection hosts video works by acclaimed video artists, including Panayota Tzamourani, who received the 1st DESTE award for her video work in 1999, Babis Venetopoulos, Nikos Giavropoulos, Stelios Dexis and Myrto Vounatsou, Takis Zerdevas and Makis Faros (who participate with a recent work by their group For Cancel along with Zoi Pirini), as well as many other artists who work with video as a medium in various forms: works from the field of video-dance (such as the works of Eleni Moustaka, Fenia Kotsopoulou and Aliki Chiotaki), video recordings of performances and artistic actions (Yiannis Pappas, Fotis Kolokithas, Gioula Papadopoulou, Anna Vasof), digital works incorporating 3d techniques (as the works of Yorgos Drosos, Thomas Vallianatos, Sophia Liarou, Makis Kyriakopoulos and Mary Savva), experimental filmic –or more “narrative”- forms of video art (such as the works of Giorgos Efthimiou, Dimitris Papadopoulos, Panos Mazarakis and the group Magenta), and personal experimentations (Poly Kokkinia, Alexandros Kaklamanos).

Through each artist’s personal gaze and conceptual approach, the works invite us to a journey, into a sequence of luminous paths and moving images which play with rhythm, motion, music, silence, alternating stillness and speed, contrasting between the reverie of the little things and the critical observation of the reality that surrounds us, with the beauty, the agony, the humor, the playfulness and the tragedy of being coexisting, exactly as it happens in life.

The program is curated by Gioula Papadopoulou, artistic director and curator of Video Art Miden.

About “Fournos”

Fournos – Theater & Centre for Digital Culture was founded in 1992 aiming to serve as a flexible model for 21st century digital culture, combining visual and performing arts, research and technology. It was founded and directed by Dodo Santorineou and Dr. Manthos Santorineos, Professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts.

Fournos’s theater and offices are housed at the old bakery of the Santorineos family, dated back in 1935. The site has preserved the character of the old bakery with the stone chimney on stage and the 1935 wall.

The central stage of Fournos has hosted many important directors, actors and well-known theater groups, who made their first steps at that time, as well as musicians. Fournos has been a pioneer in Art and New Technologies events in Greece by launching presentations of Greek and foreign artists in this field, while supporting Greek production. From 1998 to 2006, Fournos organized the international art and technology festival Mediaterra.
